Facial Serum: What It Is, Benefits and How To Apply It
The serum has become an essential product in our beauty kit. We explain what its benefits are and how to apply it correctly.
The facial serum began to be marketed as an anti-aging product. However, it has ended up becoming an essential in our beauty routine thanks to its effectiveness.
But do you know what all its benefits are and how to use it? We tell you everything below.
What is a face serum?
A facial serum or serum is a product with twice the concentration of active ingredients than a moisturizer. Its very light gel texture penetrates more easily and quickly into the deepest layers of the skin, multiplying the results.
How and how many times a day to apply it?
Its ultralight and melting texture greatly facilitates absorption. One drop of product is enough for the entire face, neck and décolleté. Not by using more product, the results will be better. In fact, it is just the opposite. An excess of product can saturate the skin, hindering the absorption and effectiveness of the serum. To make the most of its benefits, it is recommended to apply the serum on completely clean skin and before any other easy-care products. Otherwise, these would form a layer that would make it difficult for the skin to absorb.
The ideal is to apply it twice a day, in the morning and at night. Unless otherwise stated in the product instructions. For example, there are serums with a specific formula for their application and night effectiveness. These often contain an anti-aging complex called retinol. It is specially specially designed to boost skin cell repair while we sleep. One of its main characteristics is photosensitivity. Therefore, if we use it during the day, we must then apply a cream with a sun protection factor of 50.
Regarding the method of application, apply the serum with your fingertips and make circular movements from the inside of the face to the outside. You can apply it alone or combine it with the subsequent use of a moisturizer. This will depend on the specific needs of each skin type. If, for example, your skin is dry, the most normal thing is that you need a moisturizer to complement the hydration. But, if you have oily skin, the serum may be enough.
Who can use the serum, is it suitable for all skin types?
The serum can be used on all skin types, both oily and dry. In the case of dehydrated skin, it provides that extra and deep hydration of the skin that it needs. On the other hand, its light texture and gel (in most cases oil-free) hydrates the skin without saturating it, making it ideal for oily or combination skin. Dermatologists also recommend its use in people with skin blemishes or acne problems.
When to start using facial serum? Above all, from the age of 30 when its use becomes essential, since the first signs of aging begin to appear. The serum helps cell regeneration and delays the appearance of the first wrinkles.
Apart from the night serum with retinol that we have already mentioned, you can find other products according to the needs of the skin. Moisturizing, anti-aging, illuminating or anti-spot serums stand out.
